Hi,

I am an Architecture major and am trying to decide weather to get a laptop or build my own desktop to run programs for college.

My budget is around us $1000 to $1500, I figure I can get a good system with i7 4770k and probably like a r9270 and will run most of the programs I will be using for school. probably 16 gb ram, 120 ssd, with 1tb harddrive, future water cooled and moderate overclock.

These programs include Revit 2014, Form z, sketchup, AutoCad, Archicad maybe?, Photoshop, possible animation software in the future, p6 scheduling programs, and basic stuff like internet word processing and music. Probably games on and off outside of school semesters.

I am wondering if I could get near the same performance with a laptop as I would a desktop in most of these programs?

I already have a 24" 1920x1080 p moniter that I will be using for editing with either desktop or laptop.

I am looking possibly for mobility in the future but an itx, or matx could solve that problem possibly. I wanted feed back from you guys on what performace differences there would be between a desktop and laptop .

laptop I am looking at is a asus .

 G750JW-DB71

I can provide more information such as system requirments and such as well.

Even a fairly powerful laptop will not handle AutoCAD well especially if you do large projects.  A laptop at school is nice so you can move it with you, but a powerful laptop just sort of sits inbetween.  Not really powerful enough to handle your work really well, and not convenient to carry around.  Not really good for either use, just mediocre in both.

Desktop hands down, imo, you get so much more performance for the same price, obviously reducing portability too but a Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX might suit you well. Keep in mind that going smaller will always reduce performance when compared to a normal ATX desktop. Make your decision Performance, or Portability.
