tether iPad to Linux machine?

i want to use vnc to use an iPad as a second display. i'd like to use a usb cable rather than a wifi hotspot if i can, but i can't get that to work. the iPad shows up in network devices on the Linux system, but it shows as disconencted and i can't connect it.
