What was the beat cpu for the lga 775 socket no 771 mods I have everything needed for the build literally laying around except cpu give a list of the top 3 or 5 and what you think would fair beat in today's games?

I don't mind price as I will be searching for used

Again no 771 mods just 775 cpus.

If it helps the mobo Is an ASUS P5K-E

Technically the best is the QX9770, as mentioned above, however those STILL go for a premium. The best "reasonably priced" 775 is a QX9650 for a bit less than $100.

However, lga 775 allows for pretty easy overclocking of non multiplier unlocked chips, so any of the normal core 2 quads (a la the Q9650) will probably overclock just as well and are usually about half the price.

For example, my QX9650 overclocks to ~4.0 GHz using the multiplier. But my Q9500 overclocks to ~4.0 GHz as well using base clock overclocking. In cinebench they're only a few points apart.

Q9500s can be bought for like 15-20 bucks.

I had a D 805 and then a Q6600 ... now with AMD cpus.

See http://www.cpu-world.com/Sockets/Socket 775 (LGA775).html

Go to https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php and look up the performance of the best of whatever family you decide on

For example, Q9650 has a 4169 score , QX9770 has a 4611 score  but it's 95w TDP vs 136w TDP (some motherboards won't handle 100w+ TDP without some extra cooling on the VRM)

yeah i was about to say this is a very googleable question

lol.... well you should mind the price as you might be able to source an entire machine that has a faster than 775 cpu for less than the fastest used 775 cpu.

Exactly. You could buy a 2 generation old mobo + CPU for less than you could buy a QX9770. But if you buy something 2 or 3 steps down from the top or just one of the non extreme versions, you can have a perfectly capable 775 machine.

Even the cheap 50-55$ AMD Athlon 200GE scores 5000 points, and comes with cooler AND integrated graphics card... and has a 35w TDP

Makes no sense to buy a higher end core 2 quad for around 50$ on ebay, and then spend 20-30$ on a huge cooler to keep that 95w-130w TDP cpu cool.

These old cpus are still expensive because they were sold in low volume and because a lot of people actually collect them like stamps or coins (buying one of every model as they get cheap)

AM4 boards can be bought for less than 50$, memory can be expensive but you can buy a single 4 GB stick if you're really poor and suffer for a few months until you can get together more money for the rest.

Basically you can build a faster pc for less than 200$, maybe even 150$  (as you can reuse case, psu and hard drive and even old video card, though integrated card may be faster depending on what you have).

@Lord Letto

CPU: AMD - Athlon 200GE 3.2 GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($54.90 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI - B350M GAMING PRO Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($49.89 @ OutletPC after 20$ mail-in rebate, or 59.99$ at Newegg, before a 10$ mail-in rebate)
Memory: G.Skill - Aegis 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory  ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $154.78

Buy a 2nd 8 GB stick later when you have more money (motherboard supports maximum 2 sticks so best to not go with 4 GB sticks, not to mention horrible resale value for such 4 GB sticks)

ps. The Athlon 200GE officially supports maximum 2400 mhz memory, so memory will probably run at 2400 Mhz instead of 3000 Mhz (and will work perfectly fine). Makes no sense to save a few dollars going with lower frequency memory, as you may want to upgrade cpu in the future and then higher frequency memory would help.

Some may poo-poo on motherboard choice saying it's got a "weaker" VRM for the cpu compared to others, but we're talking about a 35w TDP cpu... it will be perfectly fine. This motherboard may not be great with 8 core processors that peak to 125w-150w of power consumption, but a cpu consuming 30-50w will be no problem.
