Folks,

I'm getting ready to build a new system.  I've come up with parts lists for the two options I'm considering.  The first is a Ryzen 2700x system that would be a gaming rig / productivity and every day use.  The other system is a Threadripper 1950x system as the chip is on some steep sales and woudln't cost much more.  If I do the Threadripper build it would be setup as an Unraid system split between a main gaming / office pc and game server host plus another VM for testing purposes.  Take a look at the lists if you have time and offer any input.

Thanks

I could be wrong, so someone can correct me if I am, but for the TR system, I think if you plan to do two separate systems using unraid, you'll need 3 GPUs.

One for the console, one for the gaming rig, one for the server.

Main Rig:

Case: Lian Li Lancool Mesh RGB

CPU: Ryzen 5 3600

Cooler: CoolerMaster MasterLiquid 240

MB: MSI B550 Gaming Pro Carbon

Ram: Gskill DDR4 3600 x 32GB

GPU: Asus Arez Strix Vega 64 OC

PS: Seasonic FOCUS Gold Plus Series SSR-750FX

SSD1: Crucial P1 1TB NVME

SSD2: Adata SU800 512gb M.2 Sata

HDD: Hitatchi 2tb 7200RPM + 3x 2TB WD Passport USB 3.0

Monitors: AOC C24G1

Keyboard: Cheap Blue Knockoff Mechanical

Mouse: Uhuru Gaming Mouse
OS: Pop! 21.04

Current Vintage Equipment:  Please ask me about it, I love to talk old tech!
IBM Thinkpad 390, IBM Aptiva A12, IBM PS/2 Model 25-004.  Compaq Contura 4/25C, Presario 7596

I think gaming wise those to CPUs are quite equal, on productivity threadripper wins. But it comes to what you mainly do with your computer. Both CPU families have solid update path for them.

Going with unraid and multiple VMs is not problem free and might impact on performance.

Good input on the EVO.  I was just going off of what I could find that appeared to be the better quality.  You really only need a GPU for the system you are attaching a monitor to or will be doing any heavy graphics on.  I have Unraid already setup as my file server and game server for ARK when I actually play it.  I know there is a performance hit with a VM but it's not a lot I thought.  I'll look into that again to just be sure.  Unraid is definitely not problem free for sure!

For a first Gen Threadripper build, 2666 in a x4 configuration is generally the way to go. Some chips will do better, but most don't like to go beyond 2666 memory. IMC improvements are the big difference from first to second gen TR.

Unraid is still mostly for Intel builds. It's doable, but it's a heck of a lot of work. In 1-2 years, it'll probably be a lot more viable. If you're a user that uses a base OS and then runs a lot of VMs, then Threadripper builds make a lot more sense.
