Hey

So, im tired of those "gaming" headset craps with shitty drivers in it.. I was thinking of getting myself a real soundcard with headphones and a desktop microphone

My thoughts are at the moment those..

Asus Xonar Essence STX soundcard

AKG 550 Headphone

Modmic? Maybe?

Question is, will my headphone be able to benefit STX fully?

Why do people also suggest external DACs?

You will probably not need a sound card. USe the saved money for a Blue Snowball mic or the like.

External DACs are recommended because they're away from the internal enclosure of your PC and therefore do not get the same kind of interference and noise that an internal sound card would get.

I found my STX for just around $100 and it's been great for me, but at its regular price on Amazon and Newegg it's much less desirable compared to some of the other options out there unless you really want something internal or you want the software it comes with...

The K550 has 32 ohms of impedance so you technically don't need to add more than what on-board can supply, but if you really want an amp for the K550, I'd imagine something like the Fiio E6 or a Fireye Mini might work out for you.

Okey? So a headphone the STX can benefit from?

Normally the best approach is to get headphones you are happy with and then match the sound source to them. This is because headphones are the biggest contributor to sound quality and each headphone has a different sound.

Once you know what headphones (sound) you want and you know what other features you need you can start looking for a suitable sound source.

EDIT: the caveat to this of course is unless you are a nutcase audio crazy mad man like some of us who just keep getting headphones and only have a few sound sources to plug them into.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.
