avaible RAM issue

Go to solution Solved by -rascal-,

The real size of 16 gigs is about 12 so this is as it should be....

what?

RAM capacity is not like HDD capacity.

(1 TB = ~931 GB)

RAM capacity should be as advertised.

1 GB is 1024 MB.

8 GB is 8192 MB

16 GB is 16384 MB.

OP, did your friend buy a identical kit as his existing set, or did he buy something completely different. Here are some things he can try

  • If they are different kits, go into the BIOS and make sure all the DIMMs are running at the same timings, voltages, and frequencies
  • Reseat all memory DIMM modules
  • Try clearing the CMOS and / or resetting the BIOS to defaults
  • Enter the "System Configuration" program and click on the "Boot" tab and click on "Advanced Options" (or msconfig > boot > advanced options). Make sure the  "Maximum Memory" check box is NOT ticked off
  • Make sure Memory re-mapping is turned off in the BIOS (if there is this option).
  • Check the CPU or socket for any bent pins (bent pins can cause the issue he is experiencing)

So my friend has a RAM Isue he recently bought a 2 x 4 Gig RAM modules increasing his former 8 to 16 , his windows 7 professional 64bit does detect 16gigs but says he can only use 12 when i googled RAm availibilty it said win 7 pro 64bit should be able to use up to 192 gig

so is his some limitation in windows where it saves the 4 Gigs for some other proces or something (Dont know how say it in a sentence in english sorry :S)

Specs cpu:  i7 4770k  mobo: z87-pro RAM: Corsair vengeance 8GB GPU: EVGA GTX 770 HDD: WD blue 1TB psu: TX750M case: 550D cooling: H100i monitor: Dell U2410/Samsung sa350

+1 also you can try the MemOK button if the Asus board that your friend has it as it can help automatically fix the ram issues.

As far as i can tell from the information you gave it is one out of two things, either the DDR3 slot is dead/dust blocking contact with the RAM stick or the RAM stick is dead. If you check windows index you should see 16GB of installed memory once all RAM sticks are recognized. What you need to do is some system assessment and figure out which DDR3 slot or RAM stick is not working or if they are both working then it is a problem in windows.
