I just got a free Education key from my school but I want to upgrade to pro. can I use that key to upgrade to pro or is that not a thing. If it's not a thing, what can I do?

AFAIK there's no upgrade path beyond Pro. It's up to Pro and rest (Education and Enterprise) are extended and independent versions. If you want Pro, you buy key for it. It's $200 for real.
