6700k will be fine. Though if you don't already have it, no point in buying one now.

The 8600k/9600k will do good for VR.

If you're budgeted, the 2600 will do fine too.

I need to build a VR system for my cousin. How much CPU do I need? Would a 6700k be enough for a 1070ti? Do I need to consider more than 4 cores? If I do have to go for a 6 core I am afraid his budget will not reach.  Thank you!!

For the budget conscious?

Slap an SSD, OS, and GPU in it, and off to the races for VR.  For a lot less money than a 6700k.

My 2 copper coins if you are worried about budget.

Ryzen 5 2600 and a 1070 ti will be great if you're concerned about expensive CPUs

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

PSU tier list

How many watts do I need?

PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Honestly, even a Ryzen 5 2400G would do you just fine. CPU isn't the most important part of the system for VR. I'd go 2400G if you're strapped for cash or 2600/X/8400/8600K if you want a hex-core.

The X versions of the Ryzen cpu's are pretty much never worth it. The overclocking headroom is so low that the non X variants hit it no problem 95% of the time.

Thank you for the all of the feedback. I could sell him my 6700k so my question would be, is a 2600/8400 > 6700k for VR? Wouldn't a 6700k clocked to 4.5Ghz give better min frames than a six core with lower clocks?? OR has the time come where right around the corner it would be better to have a six core???

Thanks in advance!

Interesting idea.. would that case handle the heat from a 1070ti? Would its PSU be good enough?

PSU - I get into arguments with people here all the time on that suggested build - they would suggest you swap it out.  I always suggest making it work with various daisychained on adapters.  I haven't looked at that unit in a few weeks but it should have the 425 or 525w PSU, but the issue then comes down to how much was it used...and it *could* take something with it however I have never had that experience - PSUs just go out on me, and take nothing with them.

So IF you are really wanting a good experience I would suggest replacing it, only because the unit itself saves you a ton of that budget.

The orientation of these cases make the fans face up on the GPU - so I suggest getting a blower fan that sits in a PCI slot that suck air direct out of case above the GPU to accommodate these cases (they usually have passive intakes, so yes add fans etc)
