changing from windows to linux

so. im in a situation where im upgrading from intel cpu and mobo to amd. as a result im going to need to re install windows and I thought, while im at It, why not install Linux for the performance gains? this has me considering something though. as a Linux noob, pretty much all I care about is that my CPU will perform much faster for my work (3d rendering, blender, simulations, etc). however because I need other software only available on windows, id need to have windows too. the question is, what kind of performance loss would I expect from running windows in a VM, and could I do it at all with my CPU (1600X) because I know some CPUs have limited VM support? for my use case a dual boot isn't really an option because id need to access multiple programs at once, some on windows, others on Linux. 

 

even more complicated than that... would I be able to make an image back up of my windows system. and then restore that back up onto the VM? this would be insanely useful, but im not sure its possible...

it would be very possible to turn your windows hdd into a disk image, or if you wanted to get crazy like me, you could use the windows hdd directly from the vm instead of a disk image, allthough that means you will not beable to safely install linux on that old hdd, but i would expect that you would be getting a new hdd anyway. 

also using vm's will result in a performance drop, especially if you want gpu support in which case you can pass thru the gpu but it gets janky, really janky. 

also software like blender actually exists on linux natively, and there are plenty of alternative programs that also work fine. 

also most cpu's nowadays have decent support for vm's, although you shouldnt really need a vm anyways

First of you don't need to reinstall windows. I have swapped back and forth many times and it works

Unless you become well versed in VM configuration, you will not get any kind of acceptable performance out of a VM for any 3D accelerated use case.

 

You will need two GPUs, two monitors, and possibly two sets of input devices.  There is software in the works to get around needing the duplicated I/O, but it is still firmly in the realm of expert skill level requirements.

I know blender has a Linux version, and that the Linux version gives far better CPU performance and similar GPU performance. so I want to have blender open on Linux, and then a VM open using all the software I cant find on Linux. I know very little about how to use Linux, so id only want to use it for basic tasks and then use windows VM for the rest. but im guessing the VM cant use the GPUs very effectively? also, no I wasn't planning on buying a new HDD, but I could easily do so if that would help. thanks for the help.

Try installing WINE on Linux. It provides a compatibility layer between programs designed for Windows to run on Linux. Not all programs work out of the box but I've gotten WINE to work on the majority of apps I've downloaded. And you've got the forums for help as well if you need us too! :D

in that case, what If I reversed the situation? if I had windows with a Linux VM, would I still get the performance benefit for CPU tasks?

The benefits are mostly negated by the virtualization overhead imposed by a simple VM setup.

that would be great, Ive heard of WINE in the past. the compatibility thing sounds great, but would it do a good job in terms of not losing too much performance? theres not much point in me doing this unless my performance stays quite high in windows. ?

using a vm would cause a loss in performance for all things running inside of the vm, and getting it to use a gpu effectively in my experience is, well, not good. 

and if you wanted to create a disk image of your current windows installation you would have to first try to shrink the partition down to something small and measely, otherwise you will have a disk image the size of the drive on the drive which means you would have no space for anything else. 

I would highly reccoment getting a second drive if you were going a virtualmachine route so the windows vm could keep that dedicated hdd. 

however something else you could try, is first slowly get used to using windows, by using that windows installation for a while and have linux in a virtualmachine and start trying to get comfortable with it for a while, because then you could try to get fluent enough with it to swap over to it and beable to use it like a pro, and trust me, you can find anything for linux, you may not beable to install certain versions of software, but there is heaps of other software that does the same thing, normally better too.

Wine is a possible solution as long as you do not need DX11+.  The CPU benefits actually then apply to many windows apps.

 

Wine is always improving though, and DX11/12 support may be forthcoming relatively soon.

I agree it sucks, but I don't really have a choice because of the programs I need. there are certain programs in the 3D industry that simply cannot be replaced unless you want to add hours more work to each task

true, wine is nice and i use it on this laptop i am currently forum'ing on at school (the school hates the idea of me using linux on my own laptop) and wine is a nice thing to use, although it isnt always stable, so it cant be relied on, like creating a chart in word in wine crashes word.

This is very true.  And is the reason my Linux laptop has a W10 VM on it.  VM's are fine for office like tasks, but asking them to perform well is still a bridge too far unless you are into compiling your own code and tweaking things endlessly.

what makes you thing linux is so difficult, like if you wanted to install Microsoft Word, then yeah you will have some difficulties, because that mainstream piece of software is made by microsoft and was not designed to work on linux, however, this does not mean you cannot use anything else, the only reason things like that are mainstream is because they are lucky and were the first big ones to do that, this is why adobe with their photoshop program is classified as the best for that due to them being mainstream because they have been doing that since the start, but that does not mean that they are the best, it just means they have the best brand name in the eyes of the public. 

also how do you struggle to install things, are you trying to install itunes or something with an exe file and not even knowing what wine is?

It worked well for me when I was using a powerful desktop.  It could play most of the portion of my Steam library that had no native Linux version.

ok so this isn't something ill be able to do instantly, but its a way I thought of solving the problem with VMs and dual boots. 

 

I love messing around with hardware. my PC is worth about £2500 at this point and I spend every penny I have on upgrading and tinkering with it. I use it both for my job and gaming.

 

so in future when I have the money. could I make a second PC running Linux and then...im not sure what its called, but theres some kind of thing where you can send files to another PC and control that PC remotely. so, say I had an animation to render. I could make 2 files. one renders frames 1 to 100. the second does frames 101 to 200. then I send one file to the other PC so i can render both halfs at once. that way I can use my main windows PC for all my windows-only programs, and then use the other PC for Linux performance boost in blender and stuff?

I struggle to find the right files and applications that work with this thing or that thing, and then how to even install them in the first place. The whole damn thing is confusing as hell. The only thing i understand about Linux is the desktop. everything else seems like a very real struggle.

In theory yeah.  Though in Blender you should be able to automatically slave one PC to the other, making it a dedicated render node.  This automatically splits up the workload too.
