First pair of Headphones for under $100

Bwdzxc

I have decided to finally look for a pair of headphones since I already have a headset and it is kind of uncomfortable and I feel the SQ can be better. I have found some choices like

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-WS55BK-Solid-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B005BHIZU4

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40FS-Professional-Precision-Headphones/dp/B0002D03ZW

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-518-Headphones-Black/dp/B0042A68R8

http://www.parts-express.com/grado-prestige-series-sr60i-headphones--232-402?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=pla

I only listen to rap and dubstep but I do game quiet often. I prefer my headphones not to "leak" so I believe I am leaning more towards closed headset. What are your guys opinions? Thanks.

I listen to dubstep and I can tell you, a week ago I was listening to it in ear buds but I bought Monster N-Tune headphones at Walmart for $80 originally $140 so I don't know if that's still the price. But they're good for gaming and music which is what I like about them. And there is a little microphone if you have an android phone which you can use as a phone mic.

I'm sure the Sennheiser headphones are fantastic because they are Sennheiser headphones, however, they probably won't have the bass you are looking for as I'm pretty sure they have similar drivers to the HD 558's and my HD 558's don't have a huge amount of bass... Edit: even with the 518's being more closed than the 558's they probably won't have a ton of bass...

Its a good thing for ME :D but probably not what YOU are looking for...

The WS55 is probably the best choice for your use out of that list.

I don't listen to your music myself, but I can tell you that those Grados are really good! They leak like nothing else though, they are extremely open, but they control the bass like a champ! If you go for grado, you should be able to find the SR60i's for a bit cheaper than that, I think, it should be possible to find the SR80i's for under 100 as well

The HD558s have very little bass, but hey that's what you get with open headphones

I recommend you spend a little bit more and get some headphones you will LOVE like the ATH-M50s

Linux "nerd".  If I helped you please like my post and maybe add me as a friend :)  ^_^!

Two things, ATH-M50s are constantly around 100$ and don't seem worth much more than that...

Also, ATH-M50s are flat response headphone for studio monitoring, so they will also not have a ton of bass...

How are the mids and highs though? I saw a couple reviews of them saying the mids and highs were lacking...

I dunno I don't own them...

Leaning towards these:

http://www.amazon.com/Creative-EF0060-Aurvana-Live-Headphones/dp/B000ZJZ7OA

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-WS55BK-Solid-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B005BHIZU4

http://www.amazon.com/Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax-Cushions-Earpads/dp/B0093PVTPS/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I like bass but I don't want the headphones to be geared towards that. I have a nice speaker setup and a couple of extra subs in my room so if I need a bass fix I can just turn on those.

If I were in your position, I'd personally give these a try...

But I'd hold off until you get some input from other people on the forum that know more than I do :D

My reasons for selecting the headphones I linked above are:

  • Closed design
  • Brand (Sennheiser = quality)
  • Price
  • Reviews I read that said they had better bass than the 518's although it wasn't overpowering (Edit: Maybe still not as much as you want...).

With that said, I'd take my suggestion with a grain of salt and get more info first :D

Hope this helps...

Edit: For a point of reference, I have a pair of HD 558's and they have enough bass for me to enjoy deadmau5, skrillex, etc... dubstep... and if I'm not mistaken the 439's have a bit more bass...

The Crossfade LP's (Not the LP2's which suck) may be in your budget.

The Sony XB series has good bass though right?

The newer XB's suck hardcore, on top of the only good value being the XB500

Future reference I do suppose, Sony only makes about four legitimately good headphones now-a-days. (7506/V6, R1, and a couple other studio monitors I can't be bothered to remember.)

Yeah these seem like a great choice if you can find them in your budget...

You can probably get them used for under 100$ but I could only find them for around 140$ new and that's why I didn't mention them before :P

Of those three, the XPT100  would be my pick, assuming they are pretty much another rebranding of the CD990/HM5/etc, but they don't have that much bass if you compare it to the Audio-Technica's...

On another note I heard the Panasonic HTF600 would satisfy as a basshead headphone on a budget, especially with an amp, which you may be able to squeeze into the budget considering they run for ~$30 on Amazon right now.

Current PC: AMD FX8320 || PNY GTX 770 || 2x4GB || ASUS M5A97 || Corsair TX 750 V2 || Asus Essence STX || CM Storm Enforcer
Peripherals: Logitech G500S || Cooler Master Quickfire TK || Audio-Technica AT2020 || Focusrite iTrack Solo || Q701 + DT990 Pro

What amp would you recommend? Would a Fiio E10 be a better option than a amp? I am leaning towards the Audio-Technica.
