addressable rgb strips?

Hello, i do not know if this is the right section to post this, if its not, can a mod please move it? Anyway

 

I have RGB strips however they only display a single color at a time or like fade effects, i want a wave like on razer keyboards, if i get a different controller am i able to do that? This is not going on a PC, rather, under my desk. 

 

Also whats this thing on my controller? Shown in pic

seems like you have the same RGB controller as i've got a few of.

 

that's the IR receiver for the remote.

But will changing the controller do anything?
