Front mic isn't working

Hi all

recently I built a new system with windows 8.1. I have a very old headset from logitech, called Digital Precision PC Gaming Headset and the mic used to work in windows 7. Now, for the usual dual 3.5mm jacks, I believe there is no need for the headset to be listed as compatible for a particular OS, as no drivers are associated with the headset, only soundcard drivers are. Now when I went to plug in the mic, windows detects the mic but it doesnt pick any sound. Checked if its disabled, if its muted, and several other hotfixes from all over the web, but to no avail. When plugging it in its USB soundcard though, it works fine.

Now my real question is, im thinking of buying the Asus Orion headset, and the PRO version comes included with a usb soundcard. I have an Asus Maximus VI Hero mobo, and has above average onboard sound quality, so I'd much rather use the dual 3.5mm jacks, but dont want to buy a 80e headset and it wont work.

So, is the front mic not working a known issue with win 8.1 and should go with the non-PRO version of the headset, or should I spend the extra cash on the pro version just in case?

Cheers and thanks

but on the back I have already a 5.1 surround system connected, so the jack for the headphones is already taken

@sanderdegrote - already tried that, also checked if its disabled or not, but didnt work

and as a case, I have a corsair obsidian 750d. I find it hard to believe I spent 180 euros in case to find out its a case fault
