So, I'm considering getting a 4k monitor for my Xbox One X to play Red Dead 2 in all its intended glory. One of the things I've been looking at is, of course, Freesync. But since RDR2 is locked at 30fps, wouldn't this render Freesync unnecessary, as it only works at 40-60fps? Have I misunderstood something?

Freesync can work at 30FPS too. Depends on the monitor.

I have a Freesync monitor that does 30-144Hz, plus even below 30 it would do LFC.

But if the game itself just locks to 30FPS all the time you're not gaining anything.

Check monitor specs. I have seen some support Freesync down to 24fps

You do gain if the game decides to drop a frame or two which isnt all that uncommon. Consoles do benefit from freesync even though they are conventionally locked at 30fps

Hmm, can you name any specific monitors that does this? I haven't been able to find any such monitors in my search, but it would be perfect for my use case, especially if there was one with good IPS-panel and about 32" screen too. Thanks!

too bad I can't recall one, I just remember scrolling past one in the past. AMD cards can work with Freesync as low as 9 fps and TV is broadcasted as low as 24fps, so I'm not surprised if such monitor existed (though more likely to be a TV)

Yea, it might be a TV-thing, rather than a monitor-thing. AMD has a list on their website of Freesync monitors, but none that is both 4k and does Freesync down to 24-30hz. Shame, as I don't really have the space for a full on TV...
