Hi I was just wondering if anyone would be able to give me any suggestions for a good virus scanner. I currently use malwarebytes and its pretty good but I was just curious if anyone would be able to suggest a good virus scanner.

But in the interest of helping out, this is what I posted the last 12 times this was asked

None.

Step (1) Run all users as Limited Users (no install rights)

Step (2) Install heavy ad/tracking blockers on Chrome/Firefox/Opera/Vivaldi/Safari

Step (3) Run SuperAntiSpyware on a once a month scheduled task

Step (4) Enjoy a much faster PC and a cleaner browsing experience

LOL SuperAntiSpyware is more horrible than MBAM. It is good at detecting tracking cookies, and anything else like adware it will fail to detect them.

i'd disagree to parts of this..

- step 1: yes.. but its more of a hassle than it is added security.

- step 2: full disagree.. malicious ads are more rare these days than malicious ad blockers.. oddly enough.

- step 3: eh.. i'd dare point at some better options

- step 4: another disagree here. there's actually websites that take longer to load as they attempt to load their ads several times before failing. this isnt really noticeable on a powerful modern system, but so is the loading time of the ads you're blocking.

the intent is very good, the execution is acceptable but sloppy.

Your experience differs from mine.

I have used both in the past, SAS to find the stuff the rest miss.

To each their own...the logic I posted is still sound.

on (1) Find me modern scumware that will install without admin rights. I don't know of any

(2) finding solid advice on ad blockers is quite easy.

(4) I'll sacrifice loading time for a clean page. And if the site refuses to load until they shove a million ads at me, then I don't need their site.

1: but if you're about to install something, scumware flows along very easily

2: and they turn on you just as easily

4: so.. you dont need, for example.. youtube and twitchtv?

Youtube loads just fine running FlashControl, UBlock Origin, HTTPS Everywhere, DIsconnect and Decentraleyes

on (1) This is true, but the assumption here was blocking things that were trying to sneak in unannounced. If you install software from questionable sources, then yeah, you'll need an AV...assuming it can find the vector in the 1st place. A number of AV packages are tested yearly by varying sites and found to be wanting. This is why you run an anti-scumware scanner from time to time, but your point is taken.

(2) anything can turn on you...gotta keep your eyes open so not really a valid criticism.

Malwarebytes is better than pretty good and all you need. It's free and it has worked flawlessly for me for the last couple of years. I also have Windows Defender installed that checks for viruses once a week.
