I'm in a state of mind and I'm lost. I don't have much money and my server is running on LGA775. It's a prebuilt HP Elite 8000 (check my signature.) My issue is, I don't know when to upgrade. I want it a non proprietary case but then that requires a new motherboard but the motherboards are nearly impossible to find at a reasonable price for a decent one. I want to upgrade but I don't have money for DDR4 and the newer platforms (I don't even have my pc up to that yet.) What I'm asking is, is it worth buying something such as AM3 or LGA1150 and which would be the better and cheaper of the two? I only really like buying new parts (with my preferred vendor being Amazon UK.) Many thanks :)

PC - Athlon x4 845 // MSI GTX1050 GAMING X // 8GB DDR3 // 860 EVO 250GB // SANDISK PLUS 120GB

NAS - E7500 // 8GB DDR3 // 1x1TB HDD // 2x500GB HDD

//Forever upgrading

Which one are you upgrading? The NAS or the PC?

What do you plan to use the computer you plan to upgrade?

What's you budget?

DDR4 prices that still pretty high nowadays.

Also, if sticking to DDR3 go with Intel be it 1155 or 1150. You get more for your money on used components for those stuff IMHO.

CPU: Sempron 2500+ / P4 2.8E / P4 2.6C / A64 x2 4000+ / E6420 / E8500 / i5-3470 / i7-3770
GPU: TNT2 M64 / Radeon 9000 / MX 440-SE / 7300GT / Radeon 4670 / GTS 250 / Radeon 7950 / 660 Ti
