so i want to buy 2x8 ddr3l

my motherboard is gigabyte z97P-D3 with an i7 4790 non k

will ddr3l work with it?

No. DDR3L is for laptops.

It should.

 

I run DDR3L myself (4 x 8 GB) on my 2700K PC here with a Z77 board.

 

I used to have 16GB (4 x 4 GB) of DDR3 (non L).

yes you can just make sure you're not buying laptop sized sticks.
