Original build:

Intel i3-3220

8GB DDR3

GTX 650 Ti

This build lasted me for about 3 and a half years before I really needed an upgrade:

Xeon e3-1220

8GB DDR3

GTX1050 Ti

The difference in performance between these two builds is considerable. Originally, I was going to just add another 8GB of RAM and an RX580 to upgrade again, maybe swap out the cpu for a 1270/1280. Unfortunately however, my motherboard only supports 8GB of RAM, so I'm going to need to get a new one any way.

I'd like to get another cheap, used Xeon like the one I have, but maybe a little newer and more capable, something 6C/12T-ish like the e5-2667. This and an LGA 2011 motherboard can be had for quite cheap and I feel the price/performance is best using this method. My other option was to get a used B350 board and a used Ryzen 5 1600 and overclock it, but this would cost more and provide less performance in terms of gaming/streaming that I need it for.

Any thoughts on this or a similar upgrade path?

Get the fastest 4+ core Xeon you can that has hyperthreading. Or get a 3770/3770K. But you’re probably better off upgrading to a newer gen anyways. Ivy bridge is showing it’s age quite a bit

Good luck finding a cheap X79 board, even X58 boards are kind of hard to come by.

If you can't find a CPU, motherboard, and maybe RAM locally for less than $130 for X58 and $160ish for X79, go with Ryzen.

go for an X5650 and a board. i think that's what you're looking for.

https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Xeon-X5650-vs-Intel-Xeon-E31220/m355vsm6171

you can get really good deals on those chips these days.

i got 2 of them and a dual-socket board for €150 a while back.

EDIT: i know it's older than the Xeon you have now, but as you can see it is a lot faster. and because it's older it's cheaper.
