GPU down-clocking under load

Hey everyone,

So a thing I've been noticing while playing games and running benchmarks is that my Gigabyte Windforce 7950 underclocks itself from the original 1000mhz to 900mhz when it gets to 90-100% load. I was wondering if this was common? I am running driver version 13.12 which I believe is the latest driver available.

I have researched it and have found that some are saying to up the voltage. But I don't want to possibly damage the card or something along those lines. But if thats what it takes then I'd probably do it. 100mhz is a lot to lose.

Thanks and any help would be appreciated,

Gabe

-Removed stock fans and added 3 Corsair af120's and an NZXT sentry 2 fan controller

Temps stay around 55-60 degrees at max load

is it reaching its power limit or temperature limit?

edit: also what wattage is your psu?

PSU?

Selling my parts of my 900D rig for a jacked up Ncase M1. PM me for offers if interested (will take some reasonable-low offers because I'm desperate).

Parts that I'm selling: 900D (1 slot cover broken for stealth DVD drive mod) | Asus Z87 Deluxe | Cooler Master 212 Evo | Corsair 4x2GB black ram @1600mhz | EVGA 1000G2 PSU (2 cables with missing heat shrink) | DVD drive | HP membrane keyboard | Ducky Shine 3 YOTS in blue switches (warranty sticker broken)

My PSU is 600 watts, its a Corsair CX600. I'm running an FX 6300 and 8 gigs of ram, as well as three fans with a fan controller. I don't think that I'm reaching the limit at all

does the voltage droop under load?

I just ran valley and checked with gpu-z and yes it does. It goes from 1.250 to 1.125

you can try to use afterburner to force constant voltage. you can find it under settings/general. that way you dont actually overclock the card, but keep it at its rated speed.

unless you overclocked 1000mhz is the boost speed and 900mhz is the clock speed so it's probably just hitting a power limit or even a heat limit.

Spoiler

I just tried that but it once again drops voltages

are all other compatibilty settings ticked, too?

In this case it doesn't even matter if you did. It's the factory overclock that's lowering

I know that the core clock is 900mhz and the boost clock is 1000mhz. So what I did was go into afterburner and increase the clock to 1020mhz. But it still often drops down to 900mhz. Is it possible to raise the core clock speed from 900mhz.

Gigabyte windforce cards are known to downclock and undervolt. Get lightnings or directcu 2 next time.

Yeah, as Ive heard. I can probably live with it for the next few months. I can save my pennies. Try to sell it and maybe get a 780 if g-sync is affordable
