Ok linus community. I need your help. I am in the process of having a box made. The current config will be i9 9900k, RTX 2080ti 11g, Asus TUF motherboard, 16g Gskill ram @3k, and a 1tb 970 pro Nvme. The problem is that unfortunately Nvidea is being a pain in the ass with the Graphics Card availablity. And it looks like ill have to wait atleast another month, maybe two, before the box can be built. My alternative rig would i7 8700k, 1080ti 11g (x2sli), asus motherboard, 1tb 970 pro Nvme, and 16g Gskill @3k. Would there be a significant difference between both config? Enough to wait for the build time? Im going to be running either setup with 3 32” 2560 x1440p monitors. Thank you Linus community for any help.

It depends, like it always does. If you need Ray-Traycing go for the RTX 2080TI or you aren't care about it, the 2080TI SLI should be a killer-Rig.

BUT if you want to upgrade down the line to, like 2 Way NVLink RTX 2080TI, you should go for the RTX card. Pascal was out about 2 Years now so the Architecture of Turing improved significantly. I would wait the month and go with a 2080TI but if you want a Rig in its full SLI glory the two 1080TI's should serve you well.

As far as Ray Tracing is concern, i dont care much for it. From all the test so far it looks like its going to be a FPS killer at best. It will be a loooong time before we can actually see its implications and benefits. So far only one game has confirmed RTX. Metro. And remember Tessaltion? It was going to be the next great thing, yet alot of AAA titles barely even implented it. So, im just looking to get raw horsepower right now that can las tme atleast 5 years. This is, between the motherboard, the box, the cooling system, the GPU and the CPU a 5k system. I just want to make sure im getting the very best for the money, and in a timely manner. The current system i have now has been promised to my son, and you know how that is...lol. Its the “are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet” kinda thing. If the current config i have coming is worth the 7-8 extra weeks, Ill tuff it out. But if its not more then a 20% improvement at best, i rather just go with the 1080ti x2SLI setup. Which i can have in about 10 days considering Intels i9 9900k Launches on the 19th. And i dont see Intel having a back order issue with that particualr CPU since its alot easier to upgrade a GPU then it is a CPU.
