Backing up 3TB?

NotKalo
Go to solution Solved by NotKalo,

Hey all, figured it out.

In Azure you don't pay 170 euro, you get 170 euro free credit within a month to "test" whatever you wish.

I remembered i have a OneDrive location with my previous school. They still haven't deleted it. I know the admin account credentials form a while back.
Using SharePoint PowerShell I amended my quota and now i have 5TB avaiable to backup as much as I wish.

Thank you all for the suggestions! I will consider buying external hard drive for sure!

Well, pretty straight forward, where can I back up 3 TB of information?

I was thinking getting the free subscription in Azure (170 euro) and create a VM with storage.
Or maybe I can use Dropbox/Google Drive etc?

But I need to press the red button and leave the machine upload the 3TB straight up. (I mean it might take a day or so due to network, but I work and cant monitor it all the time)

If you're willing to pay 170euro for cloud subscription why not just go to your local store and buy yourself a external harddrive yes it will be slower but you won't have to depend on your internet.

Not sure why 100megabyte/s read and write over usb3 is slower than internet?!

I would always prefer local backups over cloud storage as you always know where you data is and because of the availability. It's also pretty cheap now.

If you want it more advanced you could get a NAS, which will ultimately be more expensive but has safety build in, so to speak. (raid 1)

4TB drives are even getting there now, so yeah, no brainer if you ask me. I use a 4TB drive to back-up my NAS and that's been a great solution so far.

You're specifying 3.0, he may take 2.0 correct me if im wrong but that's slower than today's internet standart.
I don't look to argue, I suggest you to do the same.

Not looking to argue but damn I gotta be a peasant if your standard internet is usb 2.0 speeds (480mbps) while I'm at 20mbps.

"USB 2 uses 1 millisecond frames, and in High Speed (480 Mb/s) mode they are divided into 8 micro-frames. The maximum size of bulk packets (used by USB mass storage devices) is 512 bytes. According to this very informative document the theoretical maximum is 13 packets per microframe. So the theoretical maximum speed of a USB 2 drive is:

1000 * 8 * 512 * 13 = 53248000 ~= 53 MB/s

This other document from Cypress says near the end that they actually acheive 43 MB/s.

In practice the limit will usually be the flash itself."

Yes I understand that 43-53MB/s download/upload is still a lot.
