NVLink Questions

Go to solution Solved by Electronics Wizardy,

It seems like all sli boards will work fine.

What are you using nvlink for? If its for gaming, it won't use pooled ram, and that seems to be disabled on consumer cards.

I will get a single card, I was just thinking ahead in case I wanted to purchase a second RTX to pool the vRAM on 3D apps, do you think it's going to be possible?

If a mod gets created to overcome it, yeah.

For all intents and purposes the consumer NVLink (the one for RTX cards) is just like SLI bridge but with much higher bandwith and different name. It's still SLI so SLI ready mobos will support it.

You will notice that the NVLink bridge for RTX cards costs $80:

While the one for pro cards with vRAM pooling costs significantly more ($599)

They are NOT compatibile.

CPU: i7 6950X  |  Motherboard: Asus Rampage V ed. 10  |  RAM: 32 GB Corsair Dominator Platinum Special Edition 3200 MHz (CL14)  |  GPUs: 2x Asus GTX 1080ti SLI

Storage: Samsung 960 EVO 1 TB M.2 NVME  |  PSU: In Win SIV 1065W

Cooling: Custom LC 2 x 360mm EK Radiators | EK D5 Pump | EK 250 Reservoir | EK RVE10 Monoblock | EK GPU Blocks & Backplates | Alphacool Fittings & Connectors | Alphacool Glass Tubing

Case: In Win Tou 2.0  |  Display: Alienware AW3418DW  |  Sound: Woo Audio WA8 Eclipse + Focal Utopia Headphones

I don't think that means you can't do vRAM pooling with the consumer cards. You might just be more limited in what you can do if someone comes up with a mod.

What do you exactly mean by a "Mod"? (I'm curious)

Do you mean as if somehow applications made vRAM pooling possible?

Some one finds a way to mod the driver. It will won't aswell.

What 3d apps?

If you really need a 3d pro card, get a quadro, nvlink won't save you here.
