Hello everyone,

I am planning a building one computer to replace 4 computers in our office. The specs we currently use are a Core i5 Quad Core with 8 GB of ram. I use unraid currently at home so that is planned as the backbone OS. I need to have hot swappable USB for the users of the computer what I want to achieve is every user gets a graphics card and a USB PCIe card.

Plans for the build are to give every user a USB controller and a Graphics card

GeForce GT 710 2 GB $55 x 4

ORICO SuperSpeed 7 Ports USB3.0 PCI-E Expansion Card $25 x 4

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 64GB (4 x 16GB) $550 x 1

Seagate BarraCuda 1 TB $45 x 4

This is as far as I have come on the project. I am needing help finding a CPU and a Motherboard that supports 8 PCIe Cards 4 x1 slots and 4 x16 slots

The most you're gonna get from a standard sized motherboard is 7 PCIe slots, unless you get a mining board that has a bunch of 1x slots made to be used with riser cables.

I did find one board with 8 PCIe slots, the MSI Big Bang P67 Marshal. https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/msi-big-bang-p67-marshal-review,8.html, but good luck finding one. And the Marshal is an XL ATX board, so you'd need to find a case that supports the slightly larger form factor.

If you're lucky and can find a decent XL ATX board, you might be able to get the slots you need.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

Personally I don't think this sort of architecture is a good choice for office environments. Mostly because a system issue generally means all the users sit around twiddling their thumbs.

I do wonder why quad core i5 are being replaced?

That said, can you not use one or two of the USB controllers on the motherboard instead of discrete cards?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

I agree, completely capable CPU here, even if it stretches back to a 2nd or 3rd gen. Why are upgrades out of the question? What are the specs of the computers you have now.

I also agree that you should go with new Ryzen builds, about 400-500 USD per rig.
