I want to run a cat5e cable through a wall. I was wondering if I paired up two wall plates with a cat6 connecting if it would work, should I just cut a hole in my drywall and shove a simple coupler in the hole? I assume a cat6 coupler is backwards compatible with cat5e. Also the reason I don't want to run the cable itself straight through the wall is the fact I don't want someone to be able on yank on it and it rip out of my PC.

run it through the wall and on the other side (where your PC is) install a RJ45 Cat 5e networkpatch things (dont know how they're called in english so here's a picture)

Yes It would work perfectly fine, 5e and 6 have the exact RJ54 which is all the compatibility you need. At long as the manufacturer didn't f**k up the cable sequence then there will be no problem.

1 min in he explains how it doesn't matter:

The only difference in the cat6 cable compared to the cat5e is the insulation. Cat6 has more of it to prevent crosstalk.

Cat6 is cool if you can get it but it's not 100 percent required. A lot of the hype comes from rated or certified specifications for enterprise/corporate requirements. I have 16points through my house. All cat5e and no problems with sync or throughput issues. Trunked/aggregated dual gbit from my NAS woo!

You'll be fine :)

I really wanted to put in a gb switch in and have the whole house wired but atm I am just a room renter so I don't have fix it up privileges. I would love to be able to learn how to set up the switches when I finally have a chance to do it. If you don't mind some giving some tips/things not to do etc.

Sure I'd be happy to give you my thoughts. How many connections are you looking to have around the house...?
