how would the 8700k be better? is it becasue the 9700k doesnt have hyperthreading?

the 9700k doesnt have hyperthreading. also clock for clock the 8700k will be faster per core as ringbus scales poorly with more cores added.

well the 9700k will prbably be faster multithreaded, but an OC 8700k will probably be the same or faster in games. also the extra threads just make it way more flexible.

Intel has really hard time making all the processor models in their current factories - they can only make so many wafers (discs of silicon from which chips are cut out and put in the common shape you put in motherboard sockets)  each month and they're already shifting some of the lower profit parts (chipsets) to other manufacturers or moving them to older process factories (like 22 nm that was used before for chipsets and maybe ssd flash chips)

The point is, customers that buy expensive Xeon server processors are already complaining about limited stock or having to wait after Xeon processors so intel is most likely going to increase the production of those parts in the detriment of cheaper home user processors. So, there's going to be a lower quantity of regular processors on the market and out of that, an even lower percentage of that will be 9700k.

I am expecting those models will be hard to buy and more expensive that RRP (recommended retail price) by a lot ... in Europe, the intel processors already went up in some cases by up to around 50 euro.

The performance jumps over 8700k should be minimal, and you're also losing hyperthreading so you get fewer cores .... if I were you i wouldn't wait for 9700k and just buy 8700k or whatever's of similar performance now.

buy a used 8700k from someone who is upgrading (for some reason). it will be a better buy than the 9700k.

This is what I'm hoping to do, instead of trying to find a 6850K cause those were the least bought of skylake-x lol.

Tentative release dates are October, and with Intel being slow af making 14nm chips, there probably won't be much stock until late November or December

How about the i9-9900k? They should retail for around $480 if the leaks are true. Quite expensive, but really only a $100 more compared to current i7-8700k pricing. I think it's worth it having to tell your friends I'm rockin' an i9 ? It's a personal opinion though ?

But if you can't wait anymore, and don't want buyer's remorse, then you can go with either an i5-8600k, or any 1st Gen Ryzen 7. The reason is Intel will retain a 6c/6t config for the 9th gen i5, and the 1st Gen Ryzen 7 is just good value.

The rumors I've read are all October 20th. Widespread availability where you'll be able to just buy one without having to spam f5 for hours waiting for restock likely won't be until the middle or end of November.
