Data Transfer homework

Go to solution Solved by homeap5,

Many options to transfer data. Fastest - plug old HDD as second drive into your new computer. A little slower - use network sharing folders. And just copy files you want to keep.

Office will work on win10 so install it using serial. I'm not 100% sure about compatibility but Office 2003 works without problem.

Some settings for some programs may be stored in registry. If it's 64bit Vista then export keys and import them should work.

Probably not the place to talk about homework but here it goes.

For this assignment you will need to think about the following scenario and then write a detailed step by step guide on how to accomplish the problem.

Here are the facts -

10 year old system running Windows Vista, Office 2010.

Brand new HP system running Windows 10

I need to move all of the information, from the old to the new.

I will follow this guide word for word so make sure it is detailed.

See the problem here is when I transferred data on my current pc I just cloned it, but im pretty sure he doesn't want that as an answer. So how would I answer this from the perceptive of an IT class?

Well, what is "All of the information"?

If its the documents/pictures ect then a simple usb drive would do it. Ofc explain all the steps.

If its everything then there is no way without breaking Windows 10 (why its a HP and why it should matter, idk).

As usual with school work its incomplete and has no bearing on real situations :D

I would use a USB caddy and connect the drive into that and copy data over as needed.

Then on the new system reinstall all your programs and put items from desktop to desktop, documents to documents etc.

If you use outlook you will have to go into AppData/Local/Microsoft/Outlook and transfer the database files to the new (same location) on your new machine. You may have to point outlook to the data base file however.

You can also do the same for browswers like chrome. In AppData just transfer the chrome folder to where it belongs on the new machine. Hope that makes sense.
