Low annoying hum from studio monitors

JamesHewitt

I had a weird issue a while ago with my other Pc which I use for gaming. I recently bought new monitors for my music setup though (JBL 305s) and they have this constant hum whenever they're on regardless if they're plugged into an interface or anything.

Any ideas? James

I'd guess it's the monitor PSU. Does it make the same sound when they are on/off?

I bought two and both of them have the same issue. If I turn the volume on the back to 0 it won't happen but any higher you can hear it always at the same level.

That my friend, is the undeniable hum of a class D amplifier. They have a very high noise floor. Generally, you can reduce the perceived volume by moving them farther away from your sitting location.

Then it are the monitor speakers amplifiers that amplify static noise from the air to your speakers, do you need those?

Ah right, unfortunately, I can't move  them any further away from me so I guess I will just have to live with it

That's whats nice about my JBL LSR4326P, they are bi amped with class A-B amps. Plus front mounted volume control.

Though they are much more expensive than the 305s.

But I got them for $60 for the pair, so actually cheaper.
