Bottleneck? Xeon E3 1230 V5

Hi!

so a year and half ago I bought my desktop in mind of being a working station and a VR gaming rig only.

cpu: Xeon E3 1230 V5

Gpu: Asus dual Gtx 1060 6g

Ram: Evga 16gb @2133

psu: Evga G2 650w bronze +80

VR: Samsung Odyssey ( Resolution per Eye1440 x 1600)

 

and I was told that I am being held back by my GPU (and not too long ago I was told my CPU might actually be the problem) when it comes to VR experience and super sampling so recently I got lucky and flipped an old i5 4g desktop I bought for $40 paired it with the 1060 and sold for $340. (Also got a GTX 970 as backup)

 

So my question is, will my Xeon bottleneck a GTX 1080TI?

I just watched the recent bottleneck video and Linus said gpu IS most important part when it comes to bottleneck in gaming so with say $450/500 in hand, what should I do?

My end result will be best (1440x1600 90fps)VR experience.

And could not care less about any 4k(or anything higher then1440x1600) or any fps higher then required 90 for VR.

Yes, it would bottleneck a gtx 1080ti.

From this website, it shows that an i5-8400 has higher single core performance, and multi core performance.

Usually I would recommend an i5-8400 as the minimum to pair with a gtx 1080ti, so the xeon will definitely bottleneck the gpu, albeit by a small amount.

You can do VR with a 1060 6gb just fine. Dont even need to rely on frame interpolation to be playable.

If you use heavy super sampling then no, otherwise yes.

then why super sampling? You understand that super sampling is just rendering high resolution image to fit in low resolution screen right?

See my lack of knowledge comes from lack of information and videos, at least from my research, about paring the right graphic card for VR or even the right VR headset.

So wouldn't super sampling make the game graphics look better in VR? (if we ignore my previous statement about 4k and resolution higher then 1440x1600)

 

In general, wouldn't a 1080ti make a game look better in VR? Considering i can super sample since the Samsung Odyssey screens are only 1440x1600 per eye

 

My concern is, if my Xeon will bottleneck a 1080ti then I will go ahead and get a 1080 instead and use the rest of the money upgrade my Xeon to a better model (say e3 1275 v6) and then in time upgrade to a 1080TI if it will even make a difference since the Samsung Odyssey is limited

super sampling thing isnt effective in actual games. You literally need to pause the game and zoom in the screenshots to see the difference.

1080ti will let you max out graphics settings so it will make VR games look better in that regard, but the cheaper 1070ti and 1080 can also do that. VR headsets do lock frame rates to 45fps or 90fps to maintain smoothness, so it's pointless to get an overkill GPU.

Not in VR games with the headsets' frame rate limiter. In that case you will just see both CPU and GPU under utilized.
