Did your friend buy a completely new set of RAM, and replaced the old set (e.g. not re-using the old memory sticks)?

What are the specifications (speed, timings, voltage) of the old RAM, and the new RAM kit?

If they are significantly different, the laptop might not support it.

Is he able to make it into the BIOS at all?

He might need to reset the BIOS to default settings first.

Ok so I don't really know anything about the ram because he got it used but he did keep in the old stick. And it will boot to the bios

Okay, I am thinking he bought RAM that has different specifications.

Laptops can be picky with RAM specifications.

For an example:

  • Old RAM is .... DDR3-1600 9-9-9-24 1.5V
  • New RAM is DDR3-1866 10-11-10-35 1.5V

Some laptops will allow you to manually adjust the RAM frequency and timings in the BIOS, while others do not.

IF he can adjust the memory settings, using my above example, he would want to set it to the weaker/slower settings between the two...

So, DDR3-1600 10-11-10-35 timings, and 1.5V

IF he CANNOT adjust the memory settings:

  • Resetting BIOS to default *MIGHT* allow them to work together
  • He needs to use only one set, or buy memory that matches the hold ones.

So I reset the bios to defaults and it's still not working even though we took out the new stick of ram. Do you know of anything I can do to make it boot?

Is it just blue-screening still?

Even with only the old RAM installed?

Since you reset the BIOS to defaults, you need to make sure the some of the BIOS settings are set back to what it was before.

Make sure the proper Boot drive is selected.

Other BIOS settings like CSM, Legacy/UEFI mode, etc.
