First off this is my computer build:

Sabertooth 990FX  http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=1&m=SABERTOOTH 990FX&hashedid=H9GanpgqHG8yN8yQ

AMD Phenom 1075T

8GB AMD Entertainment Edition RAM

2 WD Caviar Blue's RAID 0

HIS Reference 6870 http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win8-64.aspx

I have a issue with Windows blue screening at about 20-30 min idle.  So as a example, if I have the computer idle for 20-30 min it will NOT sleep but instead blue screen and reboot.  Here is a list of things that I KNOW it does:

  • It WILL blue screen even if I don't log into Windows.
  • If I change the sleep timer to something like 5 minutes, it will go to sleep, and resume from sleep no blue screen.
  • It will boot, blue screen, reboot indefinitely.
  • The monitor CAN be turned off (via power saving options not physically of course) and not blue screen.
  • it only takes the move of the mouse to not blue screen.
  • If a game is running in background it WILL blue screen.
  • If a movie is running in background it WILL NOT blue screen.
  • It only does it with Windows 8.1 not Windows 8

Things I have tried:

  1. Doing a clean install of Windows via a 8.1 install media.  The install of Windows goes great, but I CAN NOT install the "Windows 8" version of the Chipset driver, it hangs indefinitely and seems to be tied in with the RAID driver.  If I try installing the chipset driver using the advanced option and do not select the RAID portion of it, it goes off without a hitch.  But blue screens still occur.  I have done this 2 different ways.  I installed the "Windows 8" chipset driver, then installed the 8.1 Audio, LAN, and the 2 Utilities that ASUS has provided.  I have also not installed anything other than the 8.1 approved drivers, leaving anything the chipset driver does as pure stock.
  2. Doing a clean install of Windows 8, then upgrading to 8.1.  This method seems to "buy me some time".  I will install Windows 8, install the Windows 8 chipset driver (using the express install method which goes great), then install the video driver and then Windows Updates.  Then let it upgrade to Windows 8.1.  Then install the 8.1 audio, LAN, and Utilities from before.  This method seems to give me about a week of use before it starts doing the blue screening again.  (I have tried this method 2 times and both times are about the same)

With both methods I install all my drivers needed for peripherals, like my webcam, keyboard and mouse, and wireless adapter.  I do not think these have anything to do with bluescreens.  I also install the video drivers usually after the chipset, but before everything else.  I do not believe it is the video card either.

What I do think it is...  I have narrowed it down to 2 different things, I think.  I think it is, over the course of that week, updating the drivers for some device and I am not able to locate which device it is (the Windows update log doesn't have anything like that at all but we all know how non-informative that can be).  Another thing I think it could be is the "synced PC settings" and it is finally syncing my settings and constantly loading a setting that I have maybe changed that isn't jiving so well.

This is also what I know is happening:  According to the Event Viewer I am getting a few errors repetitively...

Error #1

This seems to be a Multimedia Controller (might be the TV tuner I have, but don't use, and don't have the driver installed for)  I will be taking it out this next time I do a clean install.  Although it has only worked with Windows Vista and didn't work with 7 and 8, and never caused any blue screen issues.  To the point that I forgot about it till just now...

Which basically says, hey we didn't shut down right.

And now I am here!!!  lol, if anyone can give me a few ideas to maybe help me troubleshoot this out a little bit.  I have been thinking that it COULD have nothing really to do with idle and maybe my HDD's are getting scanned or something and its hitting a bad sector.  (by scanned Im referring to Windows doing its maintenance while it thinks the user isn't doing anything)  I believe this simply because my HDD are by far the oldest component in my system and I am lucky that they haven't failed me yet.  This could also explain why it isn't doing it for about a week or so because maybe that first week Windows is like "wait, I got to get all this new shit sorted out first before I go trying to take care of myself"...  Anyways, those are my thoughts any other thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated!

(If you guys want my dump file I can upload it, if you need any more info just ask!)

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

I'd like a copy of your dmp's if you could.

In the mean time try theses:

  • Disable the tv tuner in device manager (right click > disable)
  • Disable USB 3 ports also and unplug anything that's in them (Known to cause bsod occasionally)
  • Download and scan your hard drives with HDTune (if that brings up bad sectors you may wanna follow this guide on attempting to recover them)

Okay, so I just turned PC on to try to find the dmp file... woops, I didn't have it set to actually leave a dump...  I have went on ahead and cleaned out my PC (dust and such), removed the TV tuner, took everything out and re-seated it so it is making good contact with everything.  I am now going to use a SMART program and check my HDD out, and then I will make it recreate the issue so it will leave a dmp for me this time :D  lol...  (I feel so ignorant offering something I didn't have beforehand)

Well, I don't know if it is causing all my bluescreens or not, but my HDD's are definitely failing.  I performed a scan and it got to about the 180GB mark and came up with about 300 bad sectors instantly, then the machine hang for about 2-5 seconds and the BSOD on me and rebooted.  So I just ordered a SSD and am saying good bye to platter HDD forever!

That will cause it for sure! Also don't discount platter HDD's. SSD's fail too. And when they fail they go fast. You should have a SSD as your OS/Boot drive and for only the most important applications. And a 1-2TB or a few 1TB drives as storage.

  • 4 weeks later...

So it has been a few weeks now, and no more blue screens.  I had a few there about 5 days in, but I found out it was to do with a C++ install.  What I ended up doing was installing the Catalyst Chipset driver for the Sabertooth 990FX R3.0, as well as the ASUS software package for the R3.0.  Everything else has came from the Sabertooth (revision 1) version, and I installed everything from the Sabertooth (revision 1) version.  Everything has went fairly smooth.

Also I used a 8.1 installation, not a Windows 8.0 install and a 8.1 upgrade.  Thanks everyone for your attention.
