Anyone know why the newer asus boards have less and less USB 2 headers? My last board has 2 and now this one only has 1. My case takes 1 USB 3 and 2 USB 2 connectors. Plus my little oc display that attaches to the board uses one. Luckily I got a hub and it has just enough for everything to work (had to split the rog display connector in half as one part is USB2 and the other separate but they are next to each other so it's normal one piece, it worked though!) But I wonder why, is USB becoming less used or somthing  ?

I think it's just about companies switching over to USB 3, and eventually, to USB C. USB 2 has most of the power and bandwidth necessary for modern devices, but I guess it's just companies moving to bigger, and better things.

Main PC:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X • Noctua NH-D15 • MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk • 2x8GB G.skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 • MSI VENTUS 3X GeForce RTX 3070 OC • Samsung 970 Evo 1TB • Samsung 860 Evo 1TB • Cosair iCUE 465X RGB • Corsair RMx 750W (White)

Peripherals/Other:

ASUS VG27AQ • G PRO K/DA • G502 Hero K/DA • G733 K/DA • G840 K/DA • Oculus Quest 2 • Nintendo Switch (Rev. 2)

Laptop (Dell XPS 13):

Intel Core i7-1195G7 • Intel Iris Xe Graphics • 16GB LPDDR4x 4267MHz • 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD • 13.4" OLED 3.5K InfinityEdge Display (3456x2160, 400nit, touch).

My Maximus X Hero has 2x USB 2.0 + 1x USB 3.0 Gen 1 headers

Upgraded to the Z370 Godlike Gaming and was pleased to see 3 x USB 2.0 (+ 3x USB 2.0 expansion card), 2 x USB 3.0 Gen 1 & 1 x USB 3.0 Gen 2 headers.
Crazy upgradability!

1 is all you need, get your hands on that NZXT extender if you need more.

True but if you had multiple things on the one port wont it slow them down? I have the extender I just wondered why there are so few ports

Uh, no. You're mixing up terms, for starters. The kinds of USB in use right now are USB 2.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1 (which used to be called USB 3.0), and USB 3.1 Gen 2. USB 3.2 was introduced this month but I haven't seen any devices that use it yet and I'm not familiar with it.

USB 2.0 is defined as have in a speed of up to 480Mbps and power up to 0.5A.

USB 3.1 Gen 1 (formerly known as USB 3.0) is up to 5Gbps and power up to 0.9A

USB 3.1 Gen 2 is up to 10Gbps and power up to 1.5A except some USB type C connectors can allow up to 5A on charge only.

There are different kinds of connectors--Type A, B, C, micro, and mini--varriations of which may be used on some or all USB standards.

Type C is reversable and can handle the higher current rating of USB 3.1 Gen 2 but is also used on USB 3.1 Gen 1 (I would love to "meet" the morons who changed USB 3.0 to USB 3.1 Gen 1 and have a little "talk" with them; all they did was cause confusion and open doors for crooked manufacturers and vendors)). It was intended to be a universal replacement for all other types but, so far, it has been slow to be adopted.

Since USB 3.1 Gen 1 and Gen 2 are faster and handle more power than USB 2.0, the latter is being phased out, which explains why newer MOBOs have fewer 2.0 headers (or none at all). The newer USB ports and cables are backwards compatible with USB 2.0 although some will require adapters to fit.
