PCIe ports are, in fact, very fast. A PCIe  x4 connection offers almost 4 gigabytes a second. You may be thinking of PCI, the previous common connector. That's very slow.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Just pulled this off google. May or may not be totally accurate but yes PCI_e is very fast. It's predecessor PCI is quite a bit slower but compared to an HDD it still has quite some pep.

Image result for pcie x1 vs x4 vs x8 vs x16

these are standard PCIe ports on a motherboard, and they are labelled with the link sizes. An m.2 uses a mini version of the x4. It's basically the amount of pins.
