I'm putting this together for someone,

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/vysXhy

I reviewed all the parts with him and he seems to like how this looks, of course I'm always open to a little advice

CPU - AMD - Ryzen 5 2600

Motherboard - Gigabyte - X470 AORUS ULTRA GAMING

Memory - GeIL - EVO SPEAR 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory

Storage - ADATA - XPG SX6000 128GB M.2-2280

Video Card - EVGA GTX 1060 (from eBay)

Case Cooler Master - MasterBox 5 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case

Power Supply - Corsair - CXM 550W

Case Fan - Corsair - Air Series AF120 Quiet Edition

I have used the X470 Aorus before, and I really liked working with it. I compared it to the Asus Prime B450 and the Strix B450-F, as well as the Gigabyte GA-AB350-Gaming 3, and XFR 2.0 on the X470 platform seems to give the best value at this price point.

Storage will be upgraded later of course, so this inexpensive M.2 drive should do for the time being. I went with M-key over M+B key to get that true PCIe x4 throughput.

At the moment, it's easier for me to get a cheap 1060 than a 580, so that's just what I went with. (no freesync or gsync involved)

The only hangup I have is with the ram, but Techpowerup wrote an article about using this ram with Ryzen, and since this is more of a budget option (that goes with the motherboard pretty well), it seems just enough.

This motherboard will be used for gaming and 3D modelling in solidworks, so after discussing with him, he decided Ryzen's multithreaded advantage was what he wanted as opposed to an i5.

TL;DR (I guess): is the ram good? anything major seem out of place?

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 11 and Fedora Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Doesn't really need the extra fan, grab a 240GB SSD instead of it, could also look for the Fractal Focus G

Why not an RX 570/580? May be cheaper and will give them free-sync savings in the future, unless that's not in the US.

Pretty sure Solid works also favors AMD in general.

Ya an RX 480 is faster than a 980 here...

I don't see HDD :/ My only concern, unless you wrok on a cloud it's ok

Upgrade later will be easy.

Extra fan will help a lot since the case only comes with 2, one in front and back.

Again, free sync does not matter. He has a high refresh rate monitor already and is gpu agnostic. 580/1060 prices at this very moment swing in favor of 1060.

Good thing I made the right choice then.

Rather hard to beat the R5 2600 right now, though R7 1700s are probably floating around the same price, might be worth getting the 2 more cores for a bit less gaming performance.

I was just looking at base EVGA 1060, so if a good 580 floats my way I'd be happy to get it. I see a decent ebay 580 that was "only mined on for 3 months", pretty negligible price difference but dual fan advantage

But what's the price and country?

As if it's in the US there's even some special edition RX 580s and Golden Sample RX 580s around $200 that are near 1500mhz out of the box

Country is U.S. and saving $50 on the graphics card is the priority over great gaming performance. He's upgrading from a first generation i7 laptop, so a used low end 580 is going to be fine for him.

Just don't get an MSI armor card, and probably avoid the gigabyte cards if possible.

128GBs is not enough, just buy the case later if it means getting a bigger SSD for years.

128 isn't enough for what exactly? He already is looking at external HDDs for Mass storage. Not like windows needs a 500gb SSD either. He just needs OS and solid works (and a couple favorite games) on the SSD.

Trust me, I'm not touching those armor cards with a 10 foot pole. If I wanted a heat sink that cheap I would make it myself.

I would fill up a 128GB drive in like 2 days with my production workload

dunno if gigabyte improved their heatsink/fan design for 500, least going by this one example.
