1. Smoother gameplay... Framerate boost is really why you overclock. 

 

2. anything that needs parallel computation like CAD modeling, 3D rendering like Blender, 3DS Max (though I think it's cpu based), Octane, etc. Really any mass parallel processing functions well on it. (That's why GPUs are so good at mining. )

You can turn up settings without FPS going down.

Things that use the GPU a lot. E.g. Blender. I'm not sure but some CAD programs might also be able to take advantage.

1) If it a 10 series card from nvidia it wont matter really, GPU boost 3 pushes it to the limit already and the card will auto dial back your OC at certain temperature targets like 72C i believe

 

2) rendering, anytask that can use GPU acceleration, video encoding, some adobe work, etc, but see above.

nothing other than a fps boost

any that require the gpu to do calculations although overclocking isn't going to show that big of a difference in something like gpu rendering
