so im looking to upgrade my current gaming rig... at the moment it is performing fine at 1080p at the highest settings on all AAA rated games at above 150fps but i would like to start gaming at either 1440p or 4k and not lose many frames in the process. Below is my specs and it would be much appreciated to leave a comment and help me upgrade to my desired rig :)

specs :

i5 7600k @ 3.8GHz

16GB DDR4 RAM

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 8GB

500GB WD blue SATA M.2 SSD

Hitachi 3TB HDD

CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO air cooler

Windows 10

I recommend upgrading this piece. The Hyper 212 is going to become a problem if you decide to get a 7700K.

Upgrade to a cooler such as the Arctic Freezer 33 eSports One, Cryorig H7, be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3/4, or even get an AIO if you want to.

That sounds like an already awesome build! (I dont know much about cooling so the cooler might be ok, might not). One thing to upgrade *might* be the CPU though, maybe an i7?

i wouldn't worry about the CPU as much if you're upgrading to 4K. get a 1080ti then a coffeelake i5/ryzen 2600 if you have the money left or so.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

My suggestion would be to wait for the RTX cards. If the increased performance is worth the price, then go with RTX. But if not, the 1080 Ti is always a good choice for $600 new.

As for your CPU, it would be a bottleneck for an upgraded system, but increasing resolution doesn't increase CPU usage. Regardless, it's something to work on as well. If you have a Z270 motherboard, try to OC at 4.5ghz. 4.8ghz@1.35v is ideal if you have a good chip. The Hyper 212 Evo can manage until that.

Your current system should be fine for 1440p 60fps gaming in AAA games with Very High/Ultra settings. If it struggles just turn a few of the more demanding settings down to medium/High. 4k on Medium settings should get you 60fps average in a lot of games as well.

Decide on what type of monitor you are buying first. Whether it's a 1440p 60hz, 1440p 144hz, 4k 60hz, or full balla $3000 4k 144hz panel. Then you will be able to work out what sort of system you need to run it. If you're just going to go with a 1440p/4k 60hz panel, your current system will be fine and there's no need to be hitting 150fps since your monitor won't be able to display it anyway.
