Birthday; new rig :)

Go to solution Solved by brob,

The NH-D15S should fit the case. It has performance fairly close to the NH-D15.

If you want to hit 5GHz in a mini-ITX box, you might research deliding.

My questions are -

Will the Dark Rock 4 be enough to cool 8700k?

Will Dark Rock Pro fit in the InWin A1?

or should I wait for 9700k for the 10-15% more efficiency

I currently own:

i3 6100 & 1060 6gb

I'd like to take advantage of Black Desert Online's new remastered settings. (CPU intensive and gorgeous game btw)

My reason for upgrade is to stop having my youtube videos buffer every 10 seconds in 1080p when playing BDO.  I get 30FPS in cities and drop down to low as 15FPS while grinding/pvp. Wanting to participate in Node Wars aswell but 100 players in combat and being able to react to abilities/situations is barely playable in optimal settings.

Thanks in advance!

Happy birthday! The build looks nice and all the parts are great choices.

Regarding the 9700K, it apparently has 8C/8T versus the 8700K which has 6C/12T so it depends on your use case, I suppose.

Why that case?

You should just go for Ryzen and a 1070ti/1080 or find a used 1080ti soon enough and save like $900

If you are doing productivity work then I would suggest waiting for the 9700k. However if you lean more to the gaming side (which I assume that you do, since you have a 1080 Ti in the build) the 8700K is just fine. :)

Please mention or quote me if you want a response. :)

Using 1080Ti's can be found for very cheap, for $600 - $700 for the decent condition ones.

Your best off with a Ryzen system. A Ryzen 5 1600/2600 are great choices.

We also don't know anything about the upcoming Intel CPU's, so I doubt the 10 - 15 % more efficient fact is true.

hi.

InWin A1 size and chi-charging appeals to me.

I am not willing to get a used 1080ti that has possibly been mined on. Thanks for your suggestion! I will definitely add those Vulcan 16GB to my cart.

Good point, the 8700k will suffice more than 3 years or more for me. Anxious on pulling the trigger though because 9700k is just around the corner 1-2 months!  Curious how its benchmarks will be :)

If you plan to overclock a much better cpu cooler would be a good idea. Otherwise, the Cryorig H7 is less expensive and a touch better.

There is a small chance that two single module memory kits will not work in dual channel. It would be better to get a 2x8GB kit.

Instead of an i7-8700K, consider an i7-8700. Its turbo clocks are just 100MHz lower so performance is quite close to the i7-8700.

Coffee Lake cpu have variable turbo clocks depending on the number of active cores. When all six cores are working both the i7-8700K and i7-8700 turbo clock is 4.3GHz. The i7-8700 also turbos to 4.3GHz when 4 and 5 cores are active while the i7-8700K turbos to 4.4GHz. See the table at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_Lake#Desktop_processors for more details.

Ive lost the forum where I read it at.

I'm leaning towards overclocking the 8700k to 5ghz below 75C. Do you have any other cooler suggestions? Not many air coolers will fit my Inwin A1 :(
