Hi there,

I'd like to upgrade my PC a little bit and for some reason I was thinking of a ryzen.

Here is my current build:

  • Intel Xeon E3-1230v3
  • Thermalright Macho Rev. A
  • Gigabyte H87M-D3H Intel H87
  • 480 Watt be quiet! Straight Power E9 CM
  • GTX 1070
  • 2x Samsung Evo 120GB
  • 2TB HDD
  • 16GB DDR3
  • Aerocool DS Cube case

Why upgrade?

I don't really have a MUST UPGRADE reason, but everything (except the 1070) is 4 1/2 years old now. And I kinda like the idea of upgrading to the newest gen.

The systems runs ok for now. I like to do multiple things at once, so playing in windowed (or borderless) mode and surfing and/or having an IDE for web dev open is a must for me.

That is why I was eyeballing the Ryzen 5 2600. I already was looking around and found these components.

  • AMD Ryzen 5 2600 6x 3.40GHz So.AM4 BOX
    • Keeping my Macho or upgrading to some other cooler I want to OC to about 4 GHz
  • 250GB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 2280
    • Boot drive
  • 1000GB Crucial MX500
    • and getting rid of the HDD, I am not even near 1 TB on that drive
  • 16GB G.Skill RipJaws V Black DDR4-3200
    • Prices vary soo much, this one was reasonable
  • ASRock B450M Pro4 AMD B450 mATX
    • mATX is a must since I don't want to get a new case
    • USB 3.1 and a USB-C Port is also a must since this should be something that can last another 4-5 years

To these parts I got some questions in hope to find some answers here :)

  1. Is the Ryzen 5 2600 the right choice?
    1. I read OCing the 2600 gives a little better performance than the 2600X, and if I can use my Macho I would save a little bit
    2. Core i5 looks good as well, don't really know how big the difference between 6 and 12 threads really is
  2. Prices of DDR4 ram are very inconsistent and can get crazy above 3200. Does anyone have experience with the G.Skill RipJaws?
  3. The ASRock seems very good, having 1x 3.1 and 1x USB-C, 4x USB 3 and 2x USB 2 I think I am decked out. Any experience?
    1. I read OC is not too good on this one because of lower power consumtion. I wouldn't really mind as long as I can get above the 2600X with OC
  4. Newer parts often have more efficient power consumption, so the 480W power supple should be sufficient, right?

So yea, that is my plan. Any thoughts and answers to my questions are very appreciated.

Thanks,

MJ

PS. What I forgot to mention, I am an silence enthusiast. So replacing a part for a quieter one is something I would always consider. :)

What is your Use Case, beyond the basic stuff listed? Nothing seems wrong with the build.

That's more or less it. I mean, having a couple of VMs running while developing, forgetting to turn them off and starting LoL while having Stardew Valley (FTL, or something similar) running, with the occational 10-50 Chrome tabs open is more or less the worst I "tourture" my PC with.

You might want the 2700, then. It's 8 cores, relatively inexpensive for them and you can give your VMs their own cores while leaving plenty of room to play most games. 2600(X) should work fine, but it's something to think about.

The hardware is old enough it's worth upgrading, along with wear & tear issues, especially on SSDs/HDDs.
