Its not linux at all, its freebsd, you can probably  run java, but something like a linux distro will be easier.

Hey!

I want to turn an old desktop into a storage machine. I want to be able to install either Windows or Linux distro of choice and share storage.

I want a system where if a user deletes something its added to an archive folder instead of being permanently deleted, so then an admin a\can recover it if necessary.

I would like to be able to allocate storage to separate users on my network, so each user has, say 500GB of storage and a 250GB Backup.

Has to be a free solution too!

I would prefer it to be software based so I can still run game servers etc off of the same machine.

My Machines:

I know. I need to update this. And I will. Eventually.

Samba. Woot

or look at turnkeylinux

https://www.turnkeylinux.org/

ofcourse some basic Linux skills are needed specially to move to recycle bin on delete

but this turnkeylinux makes it easier with a web based control panel

if I am not mistaken it is based on webmin and Debian

All info provided is to help you. I can not garantee That iT is 100% correct. Apply my solution at OWN risk. Just like overclocking has everything a risk

glad to help you

Thank you!

I will most definitely trial these options!

Not sure about freenas ( is it a stripped down Linux aka bear metal or a full Linux ? )

With turnkey you can as it is a full Debian install

like on all Linux. You can run java from command line ( if you install it xD )

and as long your ports you need are open and available
