PCI-E to M.2 adapters

Short answer, No.

It just works, uses the same power bus and I don't think anyone has ever had an issue with power using PCI-E.

No. What mobo do you have though? If it doesn't have an m.2 slot it might be an older board that doesn't support NVMe, reducing the benefit of an NVMe SSD (assuming you're talking about a PCIe m.2 SSD not a SATA m.2 SSD)

Oh wow it actually doesn't have an m.2 slot. An adapter would be fine then, assuming you're getting an NVMe m.2 SSD.

 

Side note, what are you doing with the PC? It's possible an NVMe SSD would be paying extra for stuff you don't really need. If it's just for OS + apps getting a larger SATA SSD would probably be a better choice.
