Hey, so tomorrow I'm buying a new gaming/3d modeling pc for arround 850 euros (Im in Portugal). I've been choosing the components for over a month now, and this is the final build:

  • Intel Xeon E3-1230 v3
  • Asus h87m-pro
  • Kingston Beast 8gb (4x2)
  • Samsung 840 EVO 120gb
  • WD Caviar blue 1TB
  • ASUS gtx660
  • Bitfenix prodigy m

So, what do you think? Oh and are those parts all compatible? It's my first build, so I'm really afraid...

EDIT: forgot to mention, the psu is a XFX pro 550W

What gpu do you suggest? Yap, the cheaper one

i dunno, how much money have you left when you remove the gpu, then look out for that in an amd gpu. Probably a 270x or so.

Here the 660 is 172 euros. The gigabyte version of the r9 270 costs arround the same (179).

you mean the 270x, right? ^^

in that case, go with the 270x unless you need cuda power for your 3d work?!

They are compatible, but they are not optimal. For example, a Xeon is meant for servers. That is not to say that it cannot be used in a gaming PC, but the features are optimized for servers. For example, it has Intel VPro technology, which allows remote access for maintenance while it is turned off. That is very useful for servers, but not needed for most gaming PCs. An I7-4770 would be a much better choice. I will post an optimal parts list within your price range ASAP.

No, I don't. Oh and I didn't mean 270X, i really meant 270 (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4850#ov)

yeah, well then, a 270 is still a better value than a 660 :)

Xeons are designed more for heavy duty multitasking is small business servers and reliability than for lighting fast performance. An I7-4770 would be a much better choice. How many dollars is your budget? I can help you choose better parts for your build if I know what your budget is.

but since hes doing some 3d modeling, the 8 threads of the xeon, compared to only 4 in a 4670k (which would be around the price of the xeon) would help a lot, i guess.

Yeah, my budget is really on the limit (those 850 euros) and I found the xeon the sweet spot because here in Portugal it costs the same as a 4670k, and the 4770 is like 100 euros more. I really can't afford that

I did not say 4670K. I said 4770, which also has 8 threads.

Speaking of which, a 8320/8350 would be better since 3d programs like maya are often high optimized to take advantage of the fx 8 cores architecture.

the 8320 is actually a really good/cheap idea!

AMD FX series would NOT be better. Search Google for "i5-4670 vs fx 8350" and see for yourself.
