Is it possible to have a caching proxy for more than just game launchers? Namely can I have a window's update proxy?

Windows update does this already by default but you can set the caching capabilities even more. Look at this tutorial:

If you had a domain controller or something, WSUS does caching.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-server-update-services/get-started/windows-server-update-services-wsus

It's difficult to cache HTTPS type of traffic unless you do SSL retermination/inspection, traffic out to the update server is facilitated via SSL/TLS, although some of the Windows 10 functions can cache updates on PCs in the local network.

Thanks! I'm thinking of ordering another rack mount server to do some caching.  I'm planning on switching to business internet at 1/3 the total speed but unlimited data and higher upload plus static IP.

My overall plan is to lock down my firewall so only the proxy and vpn can get through then open anything I might have to as well.  Then everything can download 24/7 at a slower speed then to my machines at a faster speed.  That way I'm safe with a static IP if the firewall closes everything.

I've been waiting to finish my basement to do all of the learning for server's and networking but the family's business will need something served from a static IP before that happens, so figured I'd get started.

I will also do vlan tagging for different security zones but that will wait for the basement finish.

Do you guy's have resources for basically anything other than what is provided? (will look through the links now) I need to learn how to set up a firewall, well know what rules to use or what process to go through to figure out what I need to set.  And this caching proxy as well.

Again this is all nothing more than buzz word concepts to me right now, I know what I want to do ~ish but not how to do it.  Also looking for advice of hardware and software or concepts to use.

Audio go Brrrrrr

  • 4 weeks later...

I got another server and haven't used it much though I do have the caching proxy set up but it's never on.

Is it possible to have the proxy proactively cache updates? Or does it need to be triggered by a user queuing the download first?

also I installed WSUS on my original server

I don't think you can do that with SteamCache but I'd expect WSUS can.

WSUS will do proactive caching of updates. but caching is really the wrong word. I'd describe it as a patch distribution server.

Caching works by saving a local copy of files as they are requested, then when subsequent requests for the files are processed it serves the local copy.

I'd suggest looking into Dynamic DNS and keeping your quicker residential setup (depending on what your wanting to setup - i.e. exchange would be a no go, but most other things would work fine).
