Hi all I am a bit stuck. I have been messing around with pcs since windows 95, I have broke them, repaired them hacked them but i now find myself lost

I currently run a

P5K motherboard

Q6600 2.4ghz quad core cpu with standard Intel cooler

8gb DDR2 800mhz

GT 730 4gb gddr5 gpu

Gaming case with 3 inch fan from and rear

2 sata 2tb hdd drives

I currently run yosemite Mac OSX on one hdd dual booting Manjaro Linux on another hdd

I was running Windows 10 and Mac OS but I hate Windows so so much

I wanted to try my hand at pc gaming never done it before as ps3 was available but as newer games are coming out ps3 is dated and I always understood pc gaming was so much better anyways.

I upgraded my graphics card from 512mb to the gt 730 (which I seem to be learning now is s**t) and i upgraded ram to the 8gb as above the original mb from Foxconn was rubbish so I got the P5K. All these parts were really cheap so I managed to do it. I also ran an overclock clocking the cpu to 3ghz and ram seems to be running a 750mhz. May have this wrong as first time doing it haha

I am now at the point where my Mac OS hates my gpu and spits it's dummy out with crashes. Windows can play some games but I hate windows OS for multiple reasons and Linux is an unknown area at the min.

What is the best OS for gaming? (am I stuck to windows or is there better)

What should I be doing with hardware to be able to play games? (is my spec useless or can I do small cheap changes to play AAA games)

I don't have loads of money right now but just want a simple cost effective way to play some good titles and as fortnite has hit the scene I would like to try my hand at that.

Any help would be great as this new tech with Gpu specs, bottlenecking, etc etc seems to have me at a loss and confused. If I am buying a gpu I don't want to be having to upgrade it for every game just want something that will cope with games in the spectrum of my cpu.

The things I have been looking at which I thought might get me going was.....

Buy a i3 pc base and modify it to a better gpu etc etc (not sure if I can afford right now and don't know if am just getting something else that actually won't leave much improvement)

Buy a new graphics card was looking at r9 270, 280 or 290 from AMD again not sure if am looking at right gpu or not if r9 probs the 280 based on cost after all I live in UK and everything is expensive hahaha

So any ways Al stop my rant and see if any one can offer some help

Cheers

Stu

I was trying to do so with the hardware I have but not sure if it's good enough when u say cheap gaming tower what specs do u mean and cheap =?

look at used i3-8100, i5-anything, prob around 70$, used 1050 ti prob around 100, ram used canbe 8gb for 50, psu new for 30-40, case used less than 20, ssd used for 20, hdd you can use prexisting so mabye 300-400$?

From a cheap and decent standpoint you could just pick up a 2200g, motherboard, and ddr 4 ram. Then I would probably also get a new case for maybe 30 ish and a 450w psu for another 25-35 for a decent one.

Total built should be around 330-350 total build if you reuse some of your drives. You could just toss in a 500gb ssd for another 70ish then use your spin drives for storage.

This will give you a much more capable cpu, the APU on these chips is much faster than the 730 you are using and are capable of gaming at low to medium settings at 1080p. You could get a few more frames and hyper-threading by spending another 50 on a 2400g too.

This would probably be your best option instead of piecing together old components like you are planning... and in the end will cost you roughly the same. Plus in the future if you want a different Ryzen cpu with more cores or a better discrete gpu then you can just drop them in. So you have a decent upgrade path in the future if you desire.

When we say ryzen this is just a cpu correct so I would need mb, ram etc etc correct

This is full build INCLUDING storage (240gb ssd and 2 tb hdd)

My point is you could shave off about $90 if you use your own storage. I however would recommend an ssd for the OS at least.

you cant OC, the ability to OC is well worth the 5$.

buy used, you can prob get a 1050 ti with used pricing at that same price point.

You can get a system for around that price point buying used of course.

I mean you can get a dell 3010 or 3020 with a third gen core i5 or i7 and toss in a SFF 1050ti mini. For around 250-300. Then again that will have less ram, a single spin drive, and no upgrade path.

I didn't worry about the ability to OC. If he wants slightly higher clocks he would be better off with a 2400g anyways due to a higher boost clock of 3.9ghz, hyperthreading and a little more power on the APU side of things. Then again most of the early ryzen stuff hits an OC ceiling around 4.1 ghz. 200mhz in this scenario isn't going to be noticeable outside of synthetic benchmarks.

2400g is a waste, you can get pentium+1050 ti new at that price.

its about overclocking the igpu which helps alot.

If you are talking about the G-xxxx then yes, but they are all dual cores. If you are talking about a 8100 i3 build then not really either. The 2400g is about $40 more than the intel 8100.... but the intel motherboards are about $10-20 more... so 30 dollars saved there.  You cannot buy a 1050ti for 30 bucks, and you also don't have hyperthreading on that i3... so you will have less multi-thread performance.

a 1050 + g4560 will shred the 2400G in gaming benchmarks.

Depends on the game. Start running Bf1 or some of the other hungry titles and you won't be able to feed the 1050

Looking at benchmarks on medium graphics it is pulling about 55-62 fps on the 1050 + g4560

The 2400g on low with high textures pulls 75-65fps. On medium it is pulling 45-50 fps.

This is just from a few youtube benches I watched real fast.

Now there is no doubt the 1050 is much stronger than the apu on the 2400g. The problem is when paired with a g4560 it is being held back. Games like bf1 can hit 100% cpu usage on a quad core... so a poor dual core with hyperthreading just won't cut it.

games are going to use more cores going forward, not less. So a dual core is a pretty bad investment now. In comparison a 8100 with a 1050 can pull 55 fps on a mix of high and ultra.

My point is that for the price the 2200g and even to a lesser extent the 2400g are hard to beat. They have performance on par with a 1030 (which isn't great) but is enough for gaming on medium settings in most cases. It is also a very capable quad core cpu. So when you combines those 2 facts it means you would need to spend more for similar performance with another solution.
