Hello,

I'm looking for an inexpensive das chassis to combine my current fileserver with 4x4 TB HGST drives with this Dell r610 so I only need to power one box.

Any good 1/2/4u chassis on the market that don't break the bank?  I probably wouldn't expand much beyond 6-8 drives but need the 3.5" form factor.  Interface can be anything.

Thanks.

Not sure if they're still readily available, but in the "old days" of Home Servers, getting the Rackable Systems SE3016 off eBay was the cheapest SAS Storage Expander you could find.

It's a 16-bay storage case. It has a built in SAS expander and backplane, and integrated PSU. You connect it to your system using a multi-channel SAS cable, either to an HBA or a RAID card (depending on what RAID/storage system you're using). Once you connect it to your HBA or RAID Card, it should treat all the drives as if they are directly connected to the Card.

I actually have one - it's collecting dust now, as I got a Dell MD1200 for free, which - while having less capacity, is far more reliable.

Looks good. I prefer using the Enterprise DAS's from HP/Dell, etc, since they're typically more robust than the "off name" ones like the Rackable Systems units.
