Hey guys, what are the advantages and disadvantages of running a plex drive through google drive? I’m just curious on transcoding and the horse power for multiple streams and such. I’ve got an email with unlimited storage and access to gigabit upload

The main disadvantages are:

1. Latency - the data is remote and there is always a delay between sending and receiving

2. Speed - while you have 1Gbps, you won't be able to use all of that for this. Google will throttle you to evenly distribute bandwidth to other users. Speeds will be quite inconsistent at certain times of the day.

Transcoding has to be done by the Plex server, that's unaffected.

Doesn't google drive have to be synced to your computer in order to show it through windows file explorer? As in, wouldn't you need to store ~2tb~ of movie data on your computer anyway. To my knowledge, you cant just view your entire drive through file explorer without it actually being saved to your computer in some form.

Definitely a good point, Ive tried to quickly watch some short 30s clips I had saved on drive through my phone and it was painful. Having plex would add another middle man.

@NelizMastr @AHaskin14 I’ve got a plex server I’m building, but I guess the only option would be to use my google drive as a backup of my media. I was just curious if using the drive side of things would allow access outside my network because for the life of me I can’t get to go outside the network lol

If you want to view your content from outside of your network you'll need to forward the relevant ports for Plex and then access the web interface via your browser :)

I mean I’ve forwarded the ports and it still shows my server as not available outside the network, but I was running it off of a raspberry pi as a project. I’m finally building a dedicated one
