A few minutes ago I opened chrome as usual, only to find out that it kept crashing to desktop. I scanned the laptop very recently with Malwarebytes and Avast, so that shouldn't be a issue. I also tried using Edge as an alternative and it works just fine.

The only suspicious thing is disk usage, which shoots up to 100% every time I open chrome. The laptop is about a year old and has 8 gigs of ram and 950m GPU. The CPU is a I5-7200U. I'm not using an SSD (yet) but this shouldn't happen so early in the laptop's life cycle.

But yea, the disk usage thing is symptomatic of something else, what could it be? (plenty of free space left in case you may be wondering). Also the experience outside of Chrome is "somewhat" smooth. Even with heavy titles like Witcher 3.

Have you tried reinstalling Chrome. or make sure there no update to be done

Yup I reinstalled it, the problem still persists. Quite bizarre as this never happened on my 5 year old windows 7 desktop. Is this a Windows 10 thing or something?

Interesting thing just happened. I uninstalled Chrome, only this time I made sure to delete history data with it. Installed it again from the official website and it works like a charm again. For some reason, it installed 2 extensions I've never used before (I've deleted them) as well as a theme.

Either I'm losing my mind, or something else is going on beyond my periphery.

Do you have Google sign in Google Chrome? If yes then it will automatically redownload your saved extensions.

Actually I had Google sign in, but forgot the account I was using so lost some important bookmarks. I also scanned the laptop again with malwarebytes, found about 84 "pup optional default search".

Suffice it to say that I learned an important lesson. Back stuff up at every opportunity and export bookmarks whenever possible.

Laptop running much more smoothly now, but the headache I've got won't go away for a few days because of the sources I lost for my research.
