Hello Guys,

I wanna upgrade my 8 ddr3 1600mhz ram to 16gb 2400mhz ddr3 ram. (https://www.amazon.com/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-240-Pin-Desktop-F3-2400C11D-16GXM/dp/B00DH9M3C4)

My cpu is a i7 4790k and i know that every ram speed above 1600mhz is an OC. And the ddr3 2400mhz ram runs at 1,65v, while for the i7 4790k it's better if it's not higher than 1,5v it states on their website. Will this be a problem for my pc? Will i need any special cooling?

(Motherboard is msi z97 gaming 3 if that matters)

Thanks,

No special cooling is required.

1.65V is on the higher side, and may degrade the CPU overtime.

When will this cause the CPU to fail?

Nobody knows, but if you don't plan to keep the CPU for another...3~5+ years, it should not be a concern.

As in the CPU should survive long enough until your next upgrade.

So should i just otherwise upgrade my 1600mhz 1.5v 8gb ram to 1600mhz 1.5v 16gb ram?

If you can do that, would suggest you go that route.

This way, you can keep your existing 8GB kit, and use it with the new 16GB set, giving you 24GB of RAM...if you want to do that.

Sorry if i maybe said it very unclearly, i meant that i have 2x4 gb right now. So i mean upgrading to 16gb, and not 24gb.

So should i do it if i upgrade to 16gb in total?

Because i wanna use my cpu for a couple of years, i will get a gtx 1080 soon so will 1600mhz be fine?

Your MSi Z97 Gaming 3 has FOUR memory slots, so you could use both kits together.

8GB (4GB X 2) + 16GB (8GB X 2) = 24GB, 4 DIMMs total.

DDR3-1600 MHz will be fine.

Memory speed will not be the bottleneck.

Rather, the i7-4790K, especially if not overclocked, will be have a bit of the bottleneck.

I actually meant by upgrading, to add another 2x4 gb. so that would be 4x4 gb, but i needed to explain that better so that's my fault.

Thank you very much for the help, i will just add another 2x4 gb sticks then! Thank you very much! :)
