Short version of an ongoing month long story:

My z97-ar broke during a bios update (idk how, the update was completed) and I sent it in for repair. Out of warranty, and FUBAR, so I paid for a replacement. I got a p8h61-i as a replacement. Mini itx, and one generation too old. I told them what was wrong, sent it back, and waited. A new box from Asus came, I opened it, and same itx mobo. I can't wait much longer, and I need a Mobo for my 4790k. Any recommendations? I need an m.2 m-key slot, 4 ram slots, and a heaping helping of fan headers.

I would contact ASUS through social media at this point -- faster response -- and explain to them your situation.

They should be able to work something out.

 

I'm surprised they sent you a H61 motherboard as a replacement....TWICE.

Z87 and Z97 has been already discontinued.

If ASUS cannot help you out, as I mentioned above, you will most likely need to buy a used replacement.

For under $150...I am seeing...

• Z97-A isn't bad either...
• ASUS Z97-Pro
• MSi Z97-G43
• Gigabyte Z97-D3H
• MSi Z97 Gaming 3 / 5
• MSi Z97S Krait

maybe a z87 would be better at this point. I'm upgrading in october because of the giveaway, so I'm not exactly itching to drop that much on a new motherboard.

The problem with Z87 is, if the motherboard is using an old BIOS version, it will not support the i7-4790K.

E.g. previous owner did not update the BIOS to the point where Devil's Canyon is supported = RIP GG.

Z97 natively supports Devil's Canyon (e.g. Haswell refresh like the i7-4790K, and i5-4690K).

Z87 released with the original Haswell (e.g. i7-4770K and i5-4670K).

 

You can always test your luck, but there is always that chance, especially with used hardware.
