Is it common to get a re-paste wrong the first couple of times? I had CPU temps of 88-90C while under load and tried re-pasting (Cooler Master IC Value V1) to fix the issue but there has been no improvement whatsoever. Could it be that I put in too much/ too little or is it the crappy stock cooler/ thermal paste?

i had a system where i repasted with much better paste and i got worse temperatures, but just make sure you dont apply too much and your heat sink has enough pressure against your cpu, follow the diagonal system of putting on your cooler , it helps

The same happened to me, took me 3 tries just to get the same temps again, though in my case the paste I have is not particularly good quality.

I just used the same thermal paste yesterday on my laptop and now my laptop is overheating... Until this time the BF4 runs fine but now i have huge FPS drops in every 5 sec. This Cooler Master IC V1 is a piece of shit.

It's probably due to improper tightening which is common as opposed to the paste.

@Vag Paste application is often not the problem. What are your specs?

You mean the screws aren't enough tight on the heat sink?

That or not tightened evenly.

My specs are in my profile, I tried another repaste and made sure the heatsink made firm contact with the processor but so far I'm still seeing no improvement. There could be lots of other factors in play here (ambient temp, case airflow etc.) but I'm starting to think its just the crappy paste.

The cooler isn't listed in your specs.

It's the stock Intel heatsink, are there specific models of that?

There are but the stock cooler wasn't mentioned in the specs either. Did you rotate the cooler pins counterclockwise to unlock them before installing and rotating them back clockwise after pushing in the pins?

I rotated them clockwise before putting it on the CPU and pushing the pins in diagonally, a few tutorials recommended that method.

Did all the pins click into place? If the pins aren't released before installation, they might be harder to click in.

Thermal pastes can also perform differently with different coolers and mounting pressure. The Intel stock cooler isn't as tight as other coolers that don't use push pins.

What are your specs and how is your case airflow set up? What were your temps before and what load are you using to test for temps?

The pins had a very tactile click and the black headers were visible on the underside of the motherboard. As for the airflow, I have 3 intakes (2 front, 1 top) and 1 exhaust (rear). Before the repaste, max CPU temps were 91 C while playing PUBG and 88-ish on AIDA 64, now they peak at 88 in PUBG and AIDA 64 both; no significant difference.

What header did you plug the cpu fan into and what rpm is it at load?

I changed its minimum RPM from the BIOS so it never goes above or below 3400RPM, the noise doesn't bother me so...

Seems like the plastic pins might've worn out and not providing a tight mount. It's probably either that or your core voltage is unnecessarily high. Are you using the default motherboard settings? What's the core voltage at?
