Help needed with my server

I still need help with this. I have the device/server port forwarded, and the server is running. The linux machine says the server is listening on the port. But on the public side of things, it says the port is still closed... (This is only happening for my minecraft game server, but works fine with a starbound game server)

I found the solution to my problem! The problem wasn't in the router or anything it was that I had to add an exception to the iptables of my lubuntu machine in order for it to send and receive data from outside the local network.

I have set up a games server at my parent's house and I'm having some issues with opening ports and ports already being used. My parents have Century link internet meaning they only have 1 ip address that changes periodically. The ip changes don't bother me. The problem I am having right now is that I can't see the machine even though the port is open and the server is running. I have access to both server and router configuration. To solve my issues with ports already being used I changed my servers listening ports just +1 on the end number so 4000 became 4001 and 21025 to 21026. These ports I can see and work but no matter what I do I can't get 25565 to work or 25567. Doesn't work no matter what I change it to.

Server

Running: Starbound Server & Minecraft Servers

OS: lubuntu (latest)

Connection: Ethernet

does your server has a static IP on their network?

if not, you may have forwarded the ports to the incorrect IP.

If im forwarding ports, I always make whatever IP address static, rahter than dynamic.

Yes, the machines ip stays the same. But for my servers I just use localhost or leave it blank.

right, what im asking is the IP of your server matches the IP you are forwarding to, correct?

and if so, make sure the IP of your server is configured to static in your routers settings.

Also, it may be an ISP limitation that ports cannot be forwarded over the internet.

For example, with the FiOS quantum gateway there were some ports that couldnt be touched or it would cause loss of service, and we couldnt connect to our legitimately forwarded ports from outside of the "region" so, im in MD, and if i went to FL and tried to remote in, no dice.

How did you create the forward? And on which router (model)

Some routers will also require a firewall rule to be created. Not all of them do this automatically when u port forward.

The servers internal ip is 192.168.0.40 and it will not change it is static. The router has 1 external ip that changes from time to time. I was hosting servers just fine up until now and for some reason it wont let me reach my server from those ports anymore.

have you checked with the ISP, they may have had a policy change.  Assuming you are using the ISP provided router.  If you are, they can pretty much do whatever they want to your network, whether you want them to or not.  If you arent, you may want to try resetting the router back to defaults and re configuring.

I don't think it would of changed within a week of me setting up the server.

what happens when you tracert that port.  so would be tracert whateverIP:PortNumber IIRC (havent used windows in a while).

That should tell you where the connection gets lost.

So I host a starbound server port 21026 and it works... I just tried to run the minecraft server on port 21026 and it loaded up but the website says that the port is closed... and no the starbound server is not running.

And then when I host the starbound server the port is open/visible..
