Friend's graphics card having huge performance issue

My friend and I both have the same graphics card which is a gigabyte GTX 1050. We both really like to play rainbow six siege and this card runs it pretty well for 1080p 60fps at moderate settings however his graphics card always has insane frame drops into the 20's when mine (which is the same model of the same card) never has any drops during gameplay. I told him to re-seat his graphics card and he did and it seemed to have a very minor improvement. He left it like that for a few weeks and then just this morning he said he was tired of it and uninstalled his drivers and re-installed them and re-seated the card again and now he's getting frame averages in the 20's and 30's........did he just get a bad card? Or is there something else we can try? I'm not sure what to do at the moment and I don't want him to have this experience leave a bad taste in his mouth about PC gaming. Any suggestions?

is there anything else common in your hardware?

 

if all you have in common is GPU.... my money is on some other component being the cause of the performance discrepancy.

He built the same exact system I have. Down to the case.

what about software?  does he have something running in the background that you dont?

 

performance hits like you are describing generally indicate a resource scavenging situation.

 

For example.  when im downloading/installing games on steam, my CPU utilization averages 25%.  In-game that translates to up to a 50% performance hit at times.

Just discord and MSI afterburner. He doesn't have many programs installed yet, he just built his PC a few weeks ago.

He says his temps are fine and that it stays under 60 degrees

can you put his card in your system and try it?

 

thatll rule out the card.

 

otherwise, a windows reinstall may be in order.
