What on the board has failed?

Generally speaking, though, it's more cost effective to just replace the board as they generally aren't user-serviceable with any reasonable manner of ease.

What problems were you having? What beep-codes? Why do you think it was your motherboard rather than another component?

Looks like more than just motherboard.

You see the small rectangle by the button cell battery?

See how one of the memory sticks is missing an IC?

WTF is OP doing??

I didn't much pay attention to the photo if i'm honest. I didn't know what I was looking for when discussing what had failed, so it did no good. You're entirely correct though. There's a number of things wrong here.

The chipset appears to be missing it's heatspreader, and it looks like one of the dimm sticks has a fairly jacked up spreader as well

Yeah, OP removed the heat-spreaders on the mobo (they're in the top right of the picture).

@-rascal-I can't quite tell what IC you're talking about on the GPU, but the rectangle is a module from a stick of RAM (Bottom stick, fourth from left).

You've got quite a few problems here. I'm not sure any amount of advice would help (beyond recommending not to disassemble components).

Regardless, if you've got any questions, feel free to ask.

@Imbellis, yeah corrected that.

At first, I saw the empty SMD points for VRAM IC's on the back of the GPU, but realized it could be a 2GB GPU with a 4GB PCB, etc.

Double checked and noticed one of the RAM modules is missing a memory IC, and the size fits more of a DRAM IC than VRAM IC.
